Good news/Bad news

Osama bin Laden is dead. Good news for thousands of families. Bad news for American travelers. Our government has issued a Worldwide “Travel Alert”. See www.travel.state.gov for further information.

Travel Alerts are issued to disseminate information about short-term conditions, either transnational or within a particular country, that pose significant risks to the security of U.S. citizens. Natural disasters, terrorist attacks, coups, anniversaries of terrorist events, election-related demonstrations or violence, and high-profile events such as international conferences or regional sports events are examples of conditions that might generate a Travel Alert.

Burial at Sea

I received an interesting call the other day. A lady wanted to disperse her parents ashes in the Caribbean where they loved to travel. My first thought was that it might be kind of irreverent to just throw them over the side so I did some checking.

I found out that there is a Burial at Sea service offered by some of the cruise lines and it is a no cost event. It is much more reverent than the toss over the side; so, if any of you have relatives who requested to be floated on the Caribbean give me a call.

Oh yes, there are a couple of provisos:  1. They must first be cremated. 2. You must accompany them on the cruise (although you will get to come home) and 3. We must make arrangements with the cruise line when you book the cruise.

Is God mad at us?

Do you think the wrath of God is being unleashed by all of the earthquakes and tsunamis lately? Think again. There is a geological phenomenon called “The Ring of Fire” that roughly goes around the edge of the Pacific Ocean and 75% of all the earthquakes occur in that area. It is caused by the juncture of the earths tectonic plates moving together. Volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis are all part of the same family.

I read that Japan usually can count on around 1,500 quakes per year although they are not usually a magnitude 9.0 and obviously tsunamis are  rarer; however, the seismic activity is frequent and often goes unnoticed.

The most active spot in the U.S. is Alaska where they have dozens of quakes every year but, because of the vastness of the land and the sparseness of the population, we seldom hear about any great disasters.

Back to my first question about the wrath of God. What we see happening is certainly devastating but , I think, it’s all natural.  The earth is just doing what comes natural with no malice or forethought.

I pray that God will be merciful to all of the victims of this devastating event.
